    AI retiring...

Allen Iverson is planning to retire from the NBA, nationally syndicated radio host and Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Stephen A. Smith reports.

Iverson's representatives have told Smith of Iverson's plans on Wednesday.

"I would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association," Iverson said in a statement on StephanA.com, Smith Web site. "I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn't help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case.

"I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play, and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level."

Iverson, who has played 14 seasons in the NBA, played three games with the Memphis Grizzlies but complained about coming off the bench. The team then gave him a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. The two sides eventually agreed to part ways and Iverson was waived.

Iverson had been close to signing with the New York Knicks last week but the deal fell through.

Well looks like that happiness is going to be short-lived UTVols2 lol, didn't expect him to stay retired, but looks like he's going to be back real soon.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Allen Iverson(notes) and the Philadelphia 76ers are close to a reunion.

A person with knowledge of the contract talks says the Sixers offered a one-year, non-guaranteed contract to Iverson on Tuesday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract talks had not been made public.

Iverson, his agent and business manager met with team president Ed Stefanski, coach Eddie Jordan and two other members of the organization Monday during the first formal meeting between the Sixers and their former MVP.

Iverson announced his retirement last week after an ill-fated stint with the Memphis Grizzlies. The 10-time All-Star was NBA MVP in 2001 when he led the Sixers to the NBA Finals.

    Re: AI retiring...

AI will go down as one of the best players of the post-Jordan era.

His attitude turned some off, but in his prime he was unguardable.

He has the most career points for people under 6'.
The last couple of years he has really dampened his reputation, but he was still one of the most electrifying scorers, and a player that was tough as nails.

AI was as tough as any NBA player I've ever seen. He took a beating, and would always come back for more.

I respect AI, and wish him well. He was a terrific player, and a misunderstood person.

This is why I have never cared for him. I do agree he will go down as one of the best ever post Jordan but his attitude and selfishness got to me.
